SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING A KOTATSU TABLE

For EzerpCo Barcelona, the safety of our customers is extremely important. Here we will explain you a series of tips to use Kotatsu table in optimal conditions and without any risk.

1. DO NOT SLEEP UNDER A KOTATSU FOR A LONG TIME

This is probably one of the most important rules when using a Kotatsu. When you sleep you often move your limbs and some people also roll over. (I am sure you have the experience of falling asleep lying on your back only to wake up on your belly the next morning.) While this is completely normal unconscious movement under a Kotatsu might result in you accidentally touching the heating element under the table, which can lead to serious burns! Also, depending on how deep you sleep you might dehydrate seriously while sleeping under a kotatsu table.

You can take a little nap, but don't fall asleep all night!

ENJOY YOUR KOTATSU PEACEFULLY IN A SAFE WAY

2. NEVER LET BABIES, TODDLERS OR PETS IN THE KOTATSU

When you have small children it is important to not let them under the Kotatsu when there is no supervision around! Toddlers and babies do not have the strength or intuition to get out from under a Kotatsu when it becomes too uncomfortable, and they do not have the proper communication skills to let you know. Pets and children can also get confused when under the futon of the kotatsu, which is usually pretty heavy. This might make them feel like they are trapped under the kotatsu table, with no place to go.

When using electrical heating under your Kotatsu table please consider the same safety precautions as with any electrical (heating) device!

3. DO NOT LEAVE THE HEATING UNIT ON WHEN NOT AT HOME

On a cold winter night it is great to come home and dive into your Kotatsu immediately. While this is fine, you should never leave your Kotatsu turned on for this. If for some reasons a problem occurs with the heating element the consequences can be disastrous.

Ezerpco Barcelona guarantees the quality of its products as long as the corresponding prevention and safety measures are followed.

TYPES OF KOTATSU TABLE

There are two types of Kotatsu Tables used in Japan today, differing from the configuration and the type of heating:
Charcoal: The more traditional type of Kotatsu is a table placed above a recessed floor (hori-gotatsu 掘り炬燵). The pit is cut into the ground and is about 40 centimeters deep. A charcoal heater is placed somewhere in the pit’s floor, walls, or attached with the table-frame. There is pit-type Kotatsu using an electric heater too.

Electric: The modern style of Kotatsu (oki-gotatsu 置き炬燵) consists of a table using an electric heater attached to the underside of the table. This evolved by a clay pot with hot coals placed below a table. The kotatsu usually is set onto a thin futon, like a throw rug. A second, thicker cushions is placed over the kotatsu table, above that the tabletop is placed. The electric heater attached to the bottom of the table heats the space below the comforter.

In our modern era of electric heating and electric lighting, as well as advancements in engineering and interior decoration, with elaborate couch-bed setups and beautiful designs of shitagake that make it genuinely difficult to leave your house during the winter months. With the modern designs of Kotatsu, it’s more tempting than ever to huddle in the lasting warmth and comfort with a good book for day and days on end. That is, after all, the undeniable majesty and eternal gift of the Kotatsu.

ORIGINS OF KOTATSU TABLE

EzerpCo Barcelona is around the world. The table originates from Japan. Most of the houses in the region are not insulated compared to houses in western countries. Since they lack central heating, the Japanese rely on space heating to keep warm during harsh climatic conditions.
Kotatsu tables have been in existence since the 14 century. The Japanese initially used this table as a cooking hearth. In a traditional Japanese household, women used charcoal to cook and heat the entire home. They later introduced a seating platform and placed a quilt on it. Some people called the set hori-gotatsu.

During the 17th century, the Japanese made some significant changes to the structure where they include a blanket on the platform to help them place their legs underneath the Kotatsu table for warmth. They also started creating movable Kotatsu tables to increase portability. Over the years, people have emulated different styles of making Kotatsu. The modern style is commonly known as oki-gotatsu.

They also replaced the use of charcoal with electricity as the source of heat. Manufacturers started installing electric heating fixtures to Kotatsu tables making them modernized and easy to use. Western countries emulated the Japanese and started using these tables in their households. In Japan, people wear traditional robes which allow the distribution of heat across the entire bodies when seated next to a Kotatsu. They also sit on Zabuton cushions and let their legs go under the table.

PURPOSE
Japanese houses, unlike western ones, aren’t quite as insulated. There is no central heating. It is quite expensive to have central heating in Japan due to the structure and design of most Japanese homes. Hence, instead of centralized heating, Japanese turned to spot or space heating as a source of warmth. This is when the kotatsu was introduced, to primarily insulate heat in the body at lower costs.

HOW IT WORKS

Most people may think that these tables are not effective and can only warm the lower part of the body. Its heat could easily go through Kimonos and trap the heat throughout the body.
Though we normally find its purpose as a dining table to keep families warm while eating. Moreover As long as one wants to keep himself warm under the kotatsu. Some people even take naps or sleep under the kotatsu to keep themselves warm despite of the uneven insulation.
The Kotatsu table is proven not only to be cost saving, but also quite versatile. Families can use the kotatsu not only during the winter to keep them warm. It can also be used during summer by removing the blanket and unplugging the electric heater. Finally taking out the warm functionality of the kotatsu.

WHAT IS A KOTATSU TABLE?

A Kotatsu table is a Japanese heating appliance consisting out of a table, a futon (a sort of thick blanket / quilt) and a heat source. The futon, is placed over the kotatsu table, which has a heater unit placed under its top. It is a form of a heating appliance that comprises of a wooden table, futon and a source of heat. A futon refers to a heavy blanket that covers the table to keep you warm and cozy. The heater unit goes beneath the table to create adequate warmth for everyone utilizing the table. You can place your lower body under the blanket.

Ezerpco Barcelona has very functional futons.
The futons are heavy to prevent warm air from escaping and facilitate equal circulation of heat. A kotatsu is a cheap table that comes in different sizes and shapes. Most of the families conduct their activities from one strategic position to save the costs of energy. Though the table is covered with a futon during winter, you can still use the table during summer without adding futon.

These three items (table, heater and futon) together form one comple Kotatsu set. The heat generated by the heating unit is trapped under the blanket, thereby providing a warm and cozy area for people to sit under. Most people only place the lower part of their body under the blanket, and it is not recommended to sleep under the kotatsu, because moving during your sleep can cause you to accidentally touch the heating unit.

In winter times Japanese families tend to gather around the Kotatsu and play games, eat or watch television. It is somewhat of a tradition to eat mandarins under the kotatsu in winter. Kotatsu come in various shapes and heights. Since Japanese people tend to sit on their tatami mat floors, the height of the devices used tends to be pretty low. In other places higher tables might be wishful. In this case you can sit on a chair or couch, and still enjoy the warmth provided by the kotatsu.

Even though high kotatsus are rare within Japan, outside of Japan they can be bought online at our website.
